"Shaggers" have Dr. N. F. "Sonny" Nixon to thank for moving and converting a simple gazebo into one of the most popular beer and boogie joints on the North Strand. What a difference a Wurlitzer Jukebox, a dance floor, and no midnight curfews can make. The beach party, like everything else, came to a halt Oct. 15 1954 with the onslaught of Hurricane Hazel. Even before the beer got warm, the good Doctor broke ground and rebuilt Sonny's Pavilion on the same sport the following spring of 1955. The Beach Music and Shag tradition continued until Hurricane Hugo dealt a final blow in 1989.
